I spent two fantastic weeks traveling around Ireland filming these promo’s for National Geographic, what a beautiful country. Sunrise and sunset on the West coast, is of jaw dropping beauty. Shot HD 25p on a Sony HDW 750, Kinoflow Barfly soft light for most of the interview (keeping it simple).

These interviews were shot on location for Moviephone Unscripted.
Conal Freely, lighting camerman, put the crew, and set together, which was myself (Mark Evans) lighting camerman, Sean Keane, and Ned sound recordist.
Shot on three Panasonic HDX 900′s, I thought the set was really neat, and it didn’t take long to rig, the drapes and frames were hired in, and we managed to create a mini studio in a hotel room.
A couple of Kino Diva’s for key lights, a couple of Arri 300 Mizars as back lights, and the Hollywood Micro dolly for a bit of movement, and away we go.
The footage was firewired into final cut, while we were packing up, to ensure a quick turnaround.

Moviephone Unscripted Set Panasonic AJ-HDX 900e

This was a real one man band. For this internet film, I shot, recorded the sound, edited, wrote, recorded, performed the the music, and did the interview.

It was commissioned for Mainliners, a Hepititus C Charity, its a short film about their 2009 conference, for their website.

It was all shot in High Def 25p with my Sony HDW 750, HJ11 lens.
For the interviews I used a HMI Dedo through a Chimera (to soften the light) as a key light, and a Tungsten Dedo, with a half blue, for a backlight, which peeps into shot every now and again, but I think I get away it, its tricky when you are doing everything. I cut it in Final Cut.
We also covered the speakers at the conference, for their website, this was shot by producer Becky Waters, on a EX1, I used a few snippets of this footage throughout the film.

This was shot on location in Claridges Hotel London, a three camera HD Shoot, using Panasonic HDX 900′s, and a mobile studio set up, with drapes and frames etc.

Short comedy about the perils of conforming slavishly to fashion and following celebrities, no matter what they get up to.

Synopsis: Three fashion keen girls meet to discuss their friend’s latest plastic surgery. When she arrives to show them they are initially shocked at the results but become envious after they discover the ‘enhancement’ is vogue amongst celebrities.

How we did it.

Went to the pub, with writer/producer/director and pint swilling companion David Kline, several jars later, we start talking about plastic surgery, nose job’s in particular, which became a ‘Joe’s Knob’ which became a ridiculous sketch.
A script lands through my letter box the next day. Dave has written the 1st draft, a few tweeks and its done.
My next door neighbour own’s a local shop, a kids art place/cafe, perfect, we have a location.
An ad is placed on talent circle, we get plenty of interest, we’ve got our actors.
Dave does the casting, he also know’s a prosthetics guy, Robb Crafer, who worked on ‘Wolfman’ a block buster, werewolf movie, staring Benitio Del Torro, no less, its taking shape.
With sound recordist Ben Mills, and camera assistant/editor Hanna Daisy-Paine on board, and with Dave’s constant dialogue with Rob, about knob size/shape etc cast and crew are assembled.
A date is set.
Crew and cast are called at 7.00am Sunday, we need to get the end scene shot first as it has the most prosthetics, tricky as Rob has already warned us that it will take 3 hours to fix the knobs. We have until 10am to shoot the whole thing, as kids will be arriving for a birthday party.
We want to shoot in the morning, edit in the afternoon, and publish to the internet, in the evening.
How we are going to do this is ?
Shooting 25p on a Sony HDW750, recording the images to tape, but at the same time recording to compact flash, on my neat little box called a Nanoflash.

We record Quicktime files 4:2:2 HD, then straight into Final Cut on my MacBookPro.

Prosthetics take three hours, so we have to shoot the whole thing in about 20 mins, kids waiting at the door for their party.
I used a Kinoflow Bar Fly for a key light and used the shops lights (practicals) to keep the level up.
10.30am, we are wrapped, and back to mine to start cutting.
Hanna chopped it together in about two hours, a rough cut.
Monday evening, (we didn’t quite make the Sunday deadline) we add some transitions and titles. Compress the file to H.264, Dave takes a copy on DVD and uploads to you tube!
Job done, because of the rush we were missing a few shots, but Hanna skilfully cut around it, the Actors and crew were great, big thanks to all involved……special thanks Claire for the egg and bacon buttes!
