May 2011 I shot the VT’s for these series of programmes, made by Two Four productions, for T4, channel 4.
The presenter Nick Grimshaw, finds new Stylists, in a X Factor type format show. Over 6 weeks, I filmed the heat winners, photo shoots, funky Gv’s of each of the cities. We created a studio in a warehouse, all my lights came out! and track, creating a clean, high key, lighting environment. Over several days we shot fashion tips with 2 of the judges, and Nick chose the heat winners.

Sky Atlantic ‘Design Dealers’

I have just finished a 10 week stint filming a series of programmes for independent production company Cineflix, for Sky Atlantic, its a new show called ‘Design Dealers’ so everyone is hoping for a hit!
Joss Stone features in the first

episode, the ‘Design Dealers’ Paul Liengaard and Sarah Brunner find various bits of junk in scrap yards and various other places to design a build a ‘Pagoda style swing in Joss’s garden, she was lovely, Joss and her Mum were very welcoming even baking us all muffins, a very happy crew
Its a formatted doc, all handheld, some ob doc style, some set ups. I was shooting 25p HD using a Panasonic HPX900 tape camera, for speed, the lighting I used was was minimal, an LED top light and a litepanels LED Bi colour light.

The 'Design Dealers' Sarah Brunner and Paul Liengaard

The presenters Paul and Sarah did a magnificent job, long filming days and on camera constantly. Mini cams in the Landrover (the vehicle they used to get from place to place) and me relentlessly pointing a camera at them, they were also building and designing for their commissions.
It was the first time they had done anything like this and they have my full admiration, well done chaps!

The ‘Hub’ was a barn in Devon, the kind of nerve centre of operations, its where Paul and Sarah take there junk and re-design and do it up, Tv land style.

The Pelirocco Boutique Hotel Brighton

We filmed at the Pelirocco Hotel in Brighton, as we were filming I saw a plague on the wall all about the concept of the Hotel and who had made it happen, I realised that it was my girlfriend from high school when I was 14 years old, Jane Slater and her partner. The next time we filmed there, I met her after 27 years, a right old trip down memory lane.

Canon 5d Mk11 Promo for the RCN

I am really pleased with this one. It was shot around London with my canon 5d Mk11 and shows the 5d’s abilities. Its a sensitive subject, Mental Heath Nursing, so it needed to look beautiful and still, but with

a busy feel surrounding the interviewees, which I think we achieved. I used a lightweight kit (one bag), we had an idea of the locations, but it was shot it quite quickly on the hoof.
I recorded the sound through my juicedlink using an ECM77 mic, which isolated the audio in the noiseist of locations.
It was filmed for I-Motus who were commissioned to make the film for the Royal College of Nursing.

My New HD Camera Panasonic AJ-HPX3000 P2

This is a clip from the first footage that I have shot with my new camera, the incredible AJ-HPX3000 P2. These were links with the tenor Bryn Terfel, for Sky filmed in ‘The Royal Opera House’.
The lights I used, my Balkar soft light for a key, the strip of blue light through the door was achieved with my dedo Hmi light, one more dedo lights the far background with a little blue gel.
I love the look of this new camera, the picture seems a little kinder than my HDW750.

This is an HD television programme making tool, of the highest grade. Workflow is easy, recording to P2 card, then I insert them into my seperate device, an MSU10, this transfers the files to the removable hard drive which can hold 8.5 hrs full HD pictures 1080i or 16 hours DVC Pro HD 720i, you take this away to your edit. The files are MXF files, easily read by Final Cut or Avid. This can all be done on the hoof!
The P2 bit can be a bit confusing, this is just the Panasonic’s way of transferring data.
Basically I shoot beautiful panasonic pictures, and you take away a hard drive with the files.
For longer productions we just keep swapping hard drives.
The video clip below, explains how this can work if production supply a drive, and how easy it is.

BBC1 Trade you way to the USA

I have just been into Leopards edit suites Oct10 and the programmes are looking great.
I spent most of the summer filming this series for Leopard Films, commissioned by CBBC to make 9 programmes, its The Apprentice, meets Car booty, with eleven year olds. Siara Khan (The Apprentice/Beat the Boss) was the presenter, who is great fun to work with.

I shot on DVcam a 570 with a HJ11 lens nearly all on the shoulder. Any lighting tended to be bounced, which I used my 575 HMI bounced of a Lastolight on a stand and a 2kw Blonde.
It was a really good team, I thoroughly enjoyed it, thanks to you all X

Jamie Cullum at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2010

Its May I have just finished filming at the Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2010, what a brilliant event, I love music but have never been much of a Jazzer, I think my mind has been changed I have been “turned on” as they say, to Jazz.
Director/Producer Mike Wiseman was making a short doc about the festival, a behind the scenes for Sky Arts. We were filming performances, interviews, and general atmosphere in High Definition.
I used a light weight kit, Camera HDW750, 2x lenses, tripod, and wireless monitor, I lit all the interviews with my new LED Pag toplight which worked a treat for speedy set ups, all packed in my ruck sack.
For Jamie Cullums interview I had a bit more time, as it was the main interview used my Kino Bar fly and a couple of Dedo lights.
Soundman, Geoff Price, took a feed from the sound desks using a radio mic for good performance sound.

Jamie Cullum was the headline act and blew the roof off Cheltenham Town Hall on the Sunday night, what a performer, I was on stage filming the performance, while Mike filmed from the balcony on my Canon 5d Mk11.
We then filmed an interview with a hungover Jamie, on the Bank Holiday Monday morning, he had been jamming in the Hotel until the early hours of the morning.
He gave a great interview, and what a nice chap he is, go buy his album!

I think its a rare thing but I have to say that I enjoyed nearly all the acts we filmed, highlighs being Jamie Cullum, Fringe Magnetic, Empirical, the incredible drummer from Polar Bear, Seb Roachford, and Beatboxer Shlomo who is something else, YouTube him or just go and see him you won’t be disappointed

Canon 5d Mk11 Music Video

I shot this Music Video on my Canon 5d Mk11, its made up of footage that I shot whilst filming a corporate video in the Sates. Please take care to listen to the taxi driver at the start of the film, he has a really interesting way about him.

The footage from the train was filmed on a journey from New York to Boston. I filmed/edited and wrote and performed the song, it was an old tune that had gathering dust, but I think that the harmonica sound fits quite well with the train theme

High Definition Corporate/Fujitsu Global

Its April 2010, and I have just got back from Australia. I have been shooting a promo for Fujitsu, for corporate film makers I-Motus.
Shooting in High Definition I spent 3 days in Sydney filming at the Harbour Bridge/Opera house, Bondi Beach and in the City, with a couple of days off on the beach for good measure.

My Canon 5d Mk11 on one shoulder and my Sony HDW750 over the other with the Sydney Opera House. I flew all the way to Oz to shoot a corporate promo April 2010, I spent 3 days shooting and 2 days on Bondi.

I took my flying kit which I manage to get into to 2 wheelie cases, I do a fair bit of flying so know the exact amount of kit I need, and try to keep it under the excess luggage, 3 dedolights, tripod, batteries, wide angle, wireless monitor, matte box and filters, and a small sound kit. I also squeezed in my Canon 5d Mk11, lenses, viewfinder and monopod, we had to a bit of filming at the airport so it was ideal for a few shots where we didn’t want to cause any undue attention
I shot the first 3 parts of this promo, Australia, Vienna, and London, and talented cameraman Lee Soterby shot the others, in Boston and Gothenburg.
I’m off to South East Asia in May to do the next leg of the filming!

I have been using the Canon 5d Mk11 professionally for a while now. It is a tricky camera to use, and to produce images with consistency, but with expertise and experience, the images off this camera can be amazing.

Family Christmas Canon 7d footage

This is the first footage that I have shot and edited on my Canon 7d

Its a short film made up of shots of my family at Christmas, shot on a Canon 7d shooting 25p, with a fixed 50mm lens.
I’m a bit of a singer songwriter, so I cut it to one of my songs, I hope you like it.
I’m really excited about this new breed of camera’s and have just bought a Canon 5d Mk11 and various lenses, I’m gearing up for using it professionally, and have a few projects coming up.
I will also be posting a few music vids, so please watch this space.
